Nature has remarkable abilities to regulate, adapt, and regenerate itself. Yet human activities are increasingly undermining these abilities.
We develop technology to better understand natural processes and the relationships within ecosystems. Our goal is not to control nature through technology, but to preserve and restore its inherent capabilities, allowing it to thrive and evolve on its own.
Technology should help nature regain the ability to thrive on its own.
Technological progress must not create new dependencies – especially for smallholder farmers and local communities.
That is why we are committed to open-source hardware, freely accessible software, transparent and understandable technologies, and decentralized manufacturing.
People should not only be able to use technological solutions, but also understand, manufacture, repair, and further develop them independently.
Traditional knowledge and modern scientific insights should complement and enrich one another.
Technology should empower people and give them the freedom to shape their own future.
Both approaches are guided by the same fundamental idea:
Enabling independence rather than creating dependency.
For nature, this means strengthening its ability to regulate and regenerate itself.
For people, it means gaining knowledge, freedom of action, and technological independence.
We develop technology not to dominate nature, but to understand it better.
And we make it freely accessible so that people can act independently and shape their own future.

Smart Farming gGmbH was founded in 2023 by Achim Giebler. A Bachelor Professional with many years of experience in the development and application of technical systems, he has long been interested in how technology can make a meaningful contribution to addressing social and environmental challenges. Encounters with smallholder farmers and nonprofit organizations in India deepened these reflections and played an important role in the founding of the organization.
What began as an idea to support agricultural practices through an open-source, affordable soil monitoring device gradually evolved into a broader understanding of the challenges involved. The focus is no longer on the technical solution alone, but on how we can better understand natural processes, support their capacity for regeneration, and at the same time strengthen people's ability to act independently. This development gave rise to the organization's two guiding principles: Ecologically Assistive Technology and Technological Self-Determination.
The Smart Farming gGmbH combines hands-on hardware and software development with building partnerships and fostering exchange with researchers, educational institutions, and nonprofit organizations. The aim is to develop technologies that are openly accessible, understandable, and adaptable to local needs – not as an end in themselves, but as tools for agriculture that works with nature and empowers people to shape their own future.
